SETT Glossary

19” Rack: A standard rack specification for mounting equipment.  The term 19” rack comes from the width of the front panel of the boxes that are installed in the rack.  To determine if your rack is a 19″ rack, measure the hole to hole spacing. If the hole to hole spacing measures 18-5/16″ then it is a standard 19” rack.

Cabinet Doors and Panels: Cabinet doors and panels come as standard features and are included with all SETT Server Line Racks and Universal Line Racks.  SETT ships all Server Line and Universal Line Racks completely assembled.

Cage Nut:  A cage nut is a square nut with threaded holes.  Cage nuts are used on racks that have square mounting holes. You would use a cage nut when you need to mount a product in your rack that requires a threaded hole.

Cooling System / Cooling Fan /  IT Cabinet Cooling: It is important to ensure that racks and cabinets that are used to store network equipment provide sufficient ventilation.  Even if the room is cool, the inside of a cabinet may overheat if air distribution is insufficient.  You can increase ventilation in your network cabinet by installing a cooling system or fans to circulate air throughout the cabinet.

Custom Made Racks: SETT offers custom designed network rack solutions available for businesses interested in ordering in bulk quantity. A fully customized network rack can be designed specifically for your application. A custom rack will provide convenience, functionality and longevity.

Data Center / Data Room / IT room: A facility used for housing a large amount of network equipment maintained by an organization for the purpose of managing the data necessary for its operations.  Aisle pitch and aisle clearance should be key considerations when designing the layout of a data center.

Dimensions / Measurements of Rack Mounting Depth:  To determine the rack depth, measure the horizontal distance from the forward-most part of the front rail to the rear-most point of the rear rail.  The rack mounting depth is commonly confused with the overall rack depth which includes the door in the measurement.

EIA-310:  EIA stands for the Electronic Industries Association. EIA-310 is a specification for what is often considered a “standard rack”. This specification standardizes several important features of 19″ racks, such as rack units (U or RU), hole spacing, rack opening, and front panel width.

Fixed Rails: A fixed rail is a long L shaped bracket that supports the edge of the equipment.  A fixed rail will not slide or function as a drawer.  Therefore, servers and equipment must be fully removed from the server rack if they need serviced.

ISO9001 Facility Manufactured:  ISO 9001 is maintained by ISO, the International Organization for Standardization .  ISO 9001 is a collection of standards for quality management systems.  Companies and organizations that have been independently audited and certified to be in conformance with ISO 9001 may publicly state that they are an "ISO 9001 Facility".

IT Cabinets  / Server Racks / Server Cabinets / Network Racks / Network Cabinets / Data Cabinets / Data Racks / Data Center Racks / Server Enclosures / Computer Server Racks / Rackmounts: These terms are all used interchangeably to refer to cabinets, racks, and enclosures that are used to house network equipment.

Load Capacity:  Each rack / cabinet has a maximum load capacity.  Before purchasing a cabinet / rack, you should calculate the total weight of all the equipment that you plan to mount in the cabinet and make sure this weight is less than the maximum load capacity of that specific enclosure.

Rack, Cabinet, and Server Dimensions: It is important to take into consideration the measurements of the equipment you plan to house when buying a network cabinet or server rack.   SETT offers a wide variety of small, wall-mount cabinets in the following heights:  5U, 7U, 9U, and 12U.  In addition, SETT offers larger server racks in the following heights 26U, 36U, and 42U.  In order to determine which network cabinet or server rack would best fit your needs, we strongly recommend reviewing the specification sheets of each cabinet and rack found on our website.

Rack Hole Types: The hole types for racks vary from manufacturer-to-manufacturer and from application-to-application.  There is no one standard hole type in the industry. Almost all OEM server racks are now made with square holes. Square holes can easily be converted to a threaded hole by the installation of a cage nut. These cage nuts snap into the square holes and are available in a variety of threads.

Rack Rails:  Most server racks have 4 vertical uprights. These uprights are most commonly referred to as rack rails or mounting posts and are used to attach equipment.

Rack Screws: Rack screws are used to attach equipment to the rails of a 19″ rack. Racks do not have a standard thread type. There are three common thread types for rack screws: 10-32, 12-24, and M6.

Rack Types: SETT offers many types of network cabinets and server racks including: wall mount, free standing, and desktop.  Cabinets and racks are offered in a variety of sizes including 5U (3U vertical +2U horizontal), 7U, 9U, 12U, 26U, 36U, and 42U.  Please see the specification sheet for each SETT product in order to determine which cabinet or rack will best meet your needs.

Rack Unit: 1 Rack Unit (U or RU) is defined as a height of 1.75 inch or 44.5 mm.  When purchasing equipment for mounting a rack, the height is often referred to as RU.  This is a good way to ensure that the correct height of rack is purchased to house your equipment.

Rack Upright Shape: Most server racks have 4 vertical uprights commonly referred to as Rack Rails or Mounting Posts which are used to attach equipment.

Server Line Racks: SETT offers server line racks in three different heights: 26U, 36U, 42U.  SETT Server Line Racks have a width of 23.6” and depth of 39.3” and include 4 adjustable front and back mounting rails as well as 4 leveling feet and 4 casters.  The side panels have snap closures and lock providing four way access to equipment.  For more information on SETT Server Line Racks, please see the product description on our website.

Solid Panels / Filler Panels / Blanking Panel: A solid panel is a flat piece of metal that matches the Rack Unit (1.75″) of a Server Rack.  Solid panels are used to close open space that is not being used in a Server Rack. Closing the unused space in a Server Rack helps prevents exhaust air from mixing with cooler intake air and improves the cooling of equipment.  SETT offer solid panels in two different sizes:  1U and 2U.

Temperature Monitoring: It is important to monitor the temperature inside your cabinet / rack to ensure that your components are operating within their approved temperature range.  Many cooling systems include a thermostat which can be used to monitor the temperature inside the enclosure.

UL Listed:   UL stands for "Underwriters Laboratory".  When something is referred to as “UL-listed”, it means that UL has tested the device, and the device has been approved by UL to meet their requirements for safety - ie: fire or shock hazard.

Universal Line Rack: SETT offers universal line racks in three different heights: 26U, 36U, 42U.  SETT Server Line Racks have a width of 23.6” and depth of 30.7” and include 4 adjustable front and back mounting rails as well as 4 leveling feet.  The side panels have snap closures and lock providing four way access to equipment.  For more information on SETT Universal Line Racks, please see the product description on our website.

Wall Mount Cabinets: SETT offer a variety of wall mount cabinets including the Slim Line, Soho Line, Trim Line, and Mini Pro Line.  Our wall mount cabinets are offered in the following heights:  5U, 7U, 9U, 12U.
